Taunton Marathon & Half-Marathon April 5th
1211 runners lined up for the half marathon and 201 for the marathon. It was a beautiful day, but probably too hot for many of the runners. The race director said that times were much slower than usual.
The performance of the day has to go to Chris, making his marathon debut in 3.31. Chris is not build like your typical marathon runner and decided to rely on natural fitness and mental toughness to see him through the event. He runs twice a week and only did 1 long run to prepare. The last hour of the race were pretty tough for him, but Big Chris was big & strong (except for the last few miles, where he was shuffly & limpy) Andrew Mansfield also had a great race. He cruised past me at 16 miles looking fresh as a daisy. Oz was there to do his final long run before London & had an excellent race. Carol wasn't well on saturday, but decided to give it ago anyway. She had a very tough race, but never gave up on it.
In the half, Mike was just cruising as he wasn't quite over a bout of man-flu. Tim was doing his first half for a year and ran along way inside his predicted 1.35. excellent runs from Pat & Belinda. I'm sure that was another pb from Pat. Jan also hadn't been very well and picked up an injury on the way round. She wasn't having a lot of fun in the last 6 miles, but toughed it out to the end.

Exe to Axe Sunday 5th April 2009
Simon Oliver 3.26 hour, 32nd place
Mark Lester 3.47 hour, 57th
The course was 21 miles with 4000ft of climb. 150 runners took part. This is probably one of the most scenic races around. Easily navigated route, just keep the sea on your right!
